In the last 30 years, multiple research and development activities have been completed by Olson Engineering.  Many of these programs are internally funded projects to research and develop new or improved NDT instrumentation, system and data analysis software, and visualization of the data & results. Many other research activities have been completed by Olson Engineering which were externally funded by government and commercial research programs with grants totaling more than $2 million dollars

  • National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) IDEA grants for stress wave scanning of post-tensioned bridge ducts to check for voided ducts to mitigate corrosion risk of tendons; 
  • NCHRP IDEA grant for determination of Unknown Bridge Foundations; 
  • FHWA research grant to analyze the dynamic evaluation of bridge substructures; 
  • National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I Ultrasonic Tomography granny to study concrete flaw imaging; 
  • U.S. Dept. of Agriculture SBIR Phase I grant for stress-wave scanning of wood;
  • U.S. Bureau of Reclamation grant for impact echo scanning of concrete pipes to identify corrosion of pre-stressed wire strands;
  • Maryland Highway Administration required Olson’s consulting services for a Phase I research grant by the to the University of Maryland for NDT of bridges;
  • Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) grant/project that researched and developed the seismic pavement analyzer, a pavement testing device, at the University at Texas at El Paso
